How Savvy Navvy Routes Around Exclusion Zones and Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS)
Savvy Navvy’s Smart Routing is designed to help you navigate safely while complying with maritime regulations. This includes automatically routing around exclusion zones and through Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS) in accordance with international and local rules.
What is a Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS)?
A TSS is a designated area of the sea with clearly defined shipping lanes to separate vessels travelling in opposite or converging directions. They are used in busy shipping areas such as the English Channel to reduce collision risk.
On Savvy Navvy charts, TSS zones are highlighted in pink, with directional arrows showing the flow of traffic in each lane.
How Smart Routing Handles TSS and Exclusion Zones
When plotting your route, Savvy Navvy will:
- Identify and display TSS zones along your route.
- Show the direction of traffic within each lane.
- Automatically route you in compliance with regulations, such as:
• Crossing shipping lanes perpendicularly when required by local laws.
• Following the correct direction within designated lanes when transit is necessary.
- Avoid exclusion zones entirely if they are marked as “no entry” areas on the chart (for example, restricted military zones or protected environmental areas).
This means you’ll always get the quickest safe route that respects navigation rules and helps you avoid penalties or unsafe maneuvers.
Other Regulations Smart Routing Considers
Savvy Navvy also accounts for:
- Local navigation rules where crossing angles, lane use, or restricted passages are specified.
- Depth restrictions based on your vessel’s settings.
- Wind, tides, and your boat’s performance profile to ensure the route is both compliant and efficient.
