Understanding “Minimum Speed to Sail”

The Minimum Speed to Sail setting tells Savvy Navvy the slowest Speed Over Ground (SOG) your boat needs to maintain under sail before switching to engine power is recommended.

When your SOG drops below this threshold, Savvy Navvy will automatically suggest motoring for that portion of your route.

How It Works

Even if your boat speed through the water is good, strong tidal streams can slow your SOG. For example:

  • You’re sailing in moderate, favourable wind with a boat speed of 6 knots.
  • A strong adverse current reduces your SOG to just 3 knots.
  • If your Minimum Speed to Sail is set to 4 knots, Savvy Navvy will recommend turning on the engine to maintain progress.

This ensures your passage plan reflects realistic travel times and helps you avoid getting stuck in slow conditions.

Why It Matters

  • Helps maintain consistent trip durations.
  • Improves arrival time predictions.
  • Supports safety planning by avoiding overly slow progress in adverse conditions.

You can set your Minimum Speed to Sail in Boat Settings so routing recommendations are tailored to your vessel and comfort level.
