Routes are based on your local time Wondering if our route times are based on UTC, BST or something else? The answer is: that depends on where you are. All the times shown in savvy navvy, are shown in the time of your device. So if your phone or laptop is set to UK time and you plot a route from from Cowes Isle of Wight to The Hague in The Netherlands, then the times we show you will be in BST time. “That can’t be right??” we hear you say :) It’s not, and it’ll soon be fixed. Let me explain why it happens. Today, savvy navvy assumes that you’re sailing the entire route. This means that if there are very light winds on that day (say, 2 knots) then if you were to try to sail you would move very (very!) slowly. At 0.0001 knots it would literally take you years to sail to your destination. Very soon you’ll be able to set a minimum wind speed for when you usually switch on your engine to motorFew readersWhat does "minimum speed to sail" mean?
The minimum SOG your boat needs to sail The setting 'minimum speed to sail' is the minimum Speed Over Ground (SOG) your boat needs to have in order to sail. If the boat is moving slower than this savvy navvy will suggest you turn the engine on. For example: if there's moderate but favourable wind, you might get a decent boat speed of six knots, but because of a strong current your actual speed over ground is more like three knots. At the moment savvy navvy is set up to give you the best possible route, taking into account real-time wind, tide and chart data. At the moment we provide you with one optimal route. If you would like to amend that route you can drop multiple waypoints to ensure you go "via" any specific areas. In the future we will be working on providing alternative routes based on how you like to sail, such as racing or cruising mode, so stay tuned!
