How to Share Your Live Location with Others

Good news! Passage planning is available on all Savvy Navvy plans. Want to explore more features? Learn more about Savvy Plan Pricing here.

Live Location Sharing makes it easy to share your position and track your friends on the water in real time. Whether you're coordinating a rendezvous, letting family follow your journey, or simply keeping tabs on your boating group, Live Location Sharing helps everyone stay connected on a single chart.

Why Use Live Location Sharing?

With Live Location Sharing, you can:

  • Share your real-time position with friends and family
  • See the live locations of other boaters who share with you
  • Coordinate meet-ups on the water more easily
  • Let others follow your progress during a passage
  • Stay connected without switching between multiple apps

Unlike AIS, Live Location Sharing works for anyone you choose to share with, including family and friends ashore.

Before You Start

  • You must have the Savvy Navvy app installed and be signed in.
  • People viewing your location only need the Savvy Navvy app installed. They do not need an active subscription or to be signed in.
  • If someone wants to share their location back with you, they will need a Savvy Navvy account and must be signed in.

How to Share Your Live Location

1. Open Live Location Sharing

From the main chart screen, tap the Main Menu icon in the upper-left corner.

Select Live Location Sharing.

2. Start a Sharing Session

Tap Share Live Location.

Enter the name you would like others to see on the chart, then tap Continue.

Your live session is now active.

Tap the Share icon next to your invitation link.

Choose how you'd like to send the link, such as:

  • Text message
  • Email
  • WhatsApp
  • Any other sharing option available on your device

Anyone who receives the link can view your live position on the chart.

What Your Friends Will See

Recipients can open your invitation link and view your live position directly within Savvy Navvy.

If they would also like to share their location with you, they'll need to create a Savvy Navvy account and sign in before starting their own sharing session.

What Happens If You Lose Signal?

If your device loses internet connectivity:

  • Your last known position remains visible
  • Your marker is greyed out
  • Viewers will see a "Last seen X minutes ago" message

Once your connection returns, your live position will automatically update again.

Things to Know

Live Location Only

Live Location Sharing shows your current position only.

It does not display:

  • Previous track history
  • Routes you've planned
  • Where you're heading next

Device GPS Matters

For the best experience, your device should have GPS capability enabled.

Please note that Wi-Fi-only iPad models do not contain a dedicated GPS receiver. These devices estimate location using nearby Wi-Fi networks and other signals, which can be significantly less accurate than GPS-equipped devices.

Summary

Live Location Sharing allows you to share your real-time position with friends and family while also viewing the locations of other boaters who share with you. Simply start a sharing session, send your invitation link, and stay connected on the water with everyone on the same chart.
