How to Watch or Join Another Person's Live Location

Good news! Passage planning is available on all Savvy Navvy plans. Want to explore more features? Learn more about Savvy Plan Pricing here.

When another boater shares their live location with you, you can view their position directly on the Savvy Navvy chart in real time. You can simply follow their location, or join the session and share your own location back.

This is a great way to coordinate meet-ups, track friends' progress during a passage, or let family and crew stay connected while boating.

Why Use Live Location Sharing?

With Live Location Sharing, you can:

  • See another boater's location in real time
  • Coordinate arrivals and meet-ups on the water
  • Share your own location back with a single tap
  • Keep friends, family, and crew informed of your whereabouts
  • Follow boaters directly within Savvy Navvy's chart view

Before You Start

  • You'll need a Live Location Sharing link from another user.
  • You must have the Savvy Navvy app installed on your device.
  • You do not need an active subscription to view someone's location.
  • You do not need to be signed in if you only want to watch.
  • If you'd like to share your location back, you'll need a Savvy Navvy account and must be signed in.

How to Watch Someone's Live Location

Open the Live Location Sharing link you received via text message, email, WhatsApp, or another app.

2. Open the Session

The Savvy Navvy app will launch automatically and display options for joining the session.

3. Select "Just Watch"

Tap Just Watch to view the other person's location without sharing your own.

You will now see their live position displayed on the chart.

How to Share Your Location Back

If you'd like the other person to see your location too:

Option 1: Join and Share Back Immediately

When opening the invitation, tap Join and Share Back.

Your location will be shared with the session participants and you'll be able to see their location at the same time.

Option 2: Start Sharing Later

If you initially selected Just Watch, you can begin sharing at any time.

Tap Start Sharing from within the session menu.

What Happens If Someone Loses Signal?

If a participant loses internet connectivity:

  • Their last known position remains visible
  • Their marker appears greyed out
  • The session displays "Last seen X minutes ago"

Once their connection returns, their live position will automatically update again.

Things to Know

Live Position Only

Live Location Sharing currently shows each participant's current position only.

It does not display:

  • Route history
  • Previously travelled tracks
  • Planned routes
  • Future destinations

Sharing Is Optional

You can always choose to watch another person's location without sharing your own.

Summary

Live Location Sharing makes it easy to see where friends, family, and fellow boaters are on the water. Simply open a shared invitation link to follow their position on the chart, then decide whether you'd like to watch only or share your location back. It's a simple way to stay connected and coordinate your time on the water.
